Attention teachers and community leaders! Women in Mining – California Chapter (WIM-CA) offers a variety of educational opportunities for students, teachers, and the community with a focus on STEM-based activities. On September 7th, 2023, WIM-CA met at Rio Tinto’s operation in Boron, California to learn how to lead a classroom activity using a locally mined material, BORAX, to make silly putty better known to our group as SLIME! This activity teaches chemical reactions and how two different materials combine to make a certain type of chemical bond. CLICK HERE for the slime activity instructions and CLICK HERE for the accompanying slide deck: ‘The Science of Slime and History of US Borax.’ The slime activity is adapted from WIM Education Foundation’s ‘Silly Putty’ activity. To access all of WIM Education Foundation’s activities, visit www.womeninmining.org.
WIM members can blend academics and exploration of jobs through learning activities hosted on-site at operations. Educators can request a hands-on or virtual classroom activity, to be presented by members of WIM-CA. Request a classroom event by emailing WIM-CA at info@wimca.org or contact us online at www.wimca.org.
